Why you should be wearing wool socks

We have nothing negative to say about cotton socks. Cotton is a natural product that is breathable, soft and comfortable. Cotton socks are the perfect match for wearing sneakers in spring. But wearing cotton socks in the winter is the perfect way to end up frozen toes, even in warm winter shoes. Cotton socks provide little thermal insulation and, when wet, hang on your feet like a cold, wet cloth. There’s no question about it: wool socks are the only choice for cold weather. Especially as your inner layer and especially on your feet.

Why are wool socks the only choice during winter?

1. Wool socks are heat-insulating. Wool fibre is curled and has lots of little air pockets, which have an insulating effect and make for warm, happy feet.

2. Wool socks are temperature-regulating. Not too warm and not too cold. Even though your feet stay nice and warm in snug wool socks, they will not get too warm. Wool keeps your feet at the perfect temperature.

3. Wool socks are moisture-wicking. Wet feet=cold feet and, unlike cotton, wool wicks moisture away from skin. Wool socks also keep feet warm, even when wet. Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight without feeling cold.

4. Wool is naturally water-repellent. Ever notice how water droplets bounce off the outside of a wool sweater? If your wool socks get wet from the outside, the wool fibres will prevent the water from getting all the way through to your skin and making your socks feel drenched. Wool has anti-bacterial properties.

5. Wool socks can usually be worn more than once before washing and – bonus! – wool socks tend to create less odour than other socks.

6. Wool dries quickly. But wool socks are not magical: If you trudge through a swamp, they will get soaked (but you will still have warmer feet than with cotton socks). Once the damage is done, you can still find comfort in the fact that wool socks dry relatively quickly.
