Why choose wool with the Swan label?

The Swan sets stringent requirements throughout the whole production process, and makes it easier for Nordic families to make a good and sustainable choice. Wool with the Swan logo is better for the environment, and secures safe working conditions in production, good animal welfare, and that the products are of high quality and made to last.

Health and the Environment

The Swan has strict regulations for chemical use in textile fibre production, dyeing, washing and post-treatment of finished garments. Therefore, clothes bearing the Swan logo do not contain any antibacterial substances or other chemicals on the EU’s REACH list of chemicals of particular concern. This is good for the environment and for local eco-systems close to the factory, as well as for the people who create clothes, and those who will wear them.

Working conditions

The Swan label requires that factories and production facilities have an internal quality system and that they comply with the International Labour Organisation’s core conventions. These include, among other things, freedom of association, and of course, the prohibition of child labour, discrimination and forced labour. No matter where production takes place, the Swan label has verified that the factory meets all requirements for both working conditions and the environment.

Animal welfare

The Swan prohibits all use of mulesing on wool farms.

Product safety and your skin

The skin is permeable and absorbent. Chemicals in your clothes can penetrate your skin, and should be used with caution, especially in children’s clothing. The production line from sheep to finished garment is a long one, and many wool manufacturers use a wide array of chemicals in washing, spinning and dyeing processes. To receive the Swan label, manufacturers must be in control of the chemicals used throughout the whole production process, with a complete ban on harmful substances.
